These chairs were Amtrak's original dining car chairs. To make their trains uniform, they replace all the dining car chairs with this standard chair.
In most cases the chrome was in good condition under all the rust. A lot of elbow grease was used to do this job.
Aluminum was the main item used to polish the chrome. Since it is softer than chrome it does not scratch and does not leave behind any steel residua to rust later.
A pad sander was used but instead of sand paper aluminum from a pie tin was cut to fit. Vinegar was the cutting agent. A wad of aluminum foil was used to touch up the small hard to get spots.
In places that the chrome had been damaged by the rust and age, chrome paint was used to touch up.
The refurbished chairs feature the car logo based on the New York Central oval. High density foam was used for the chair padding. The venial material is marine grade heavy duty.
